Metro Police Captain William Anders reported that a heights home was attacked by two Aztlan gang members of the Brownsville Renegades, a biker gang that frequently works with the Mafia and La Familia. "We expect full cooperation from Aztlan officials." But when pressed further he reported, "so far though, we haven't received much help."
Witnesses said that two Brownsville gang members attacked a corner gas station, wounding one, that afternoon. "We expected better protection by the police," neighborhood spokesperson Alicia Wells said. "We're already terrified to leave our homes, and now our homes aren't even safe."
The neighborhood home was struck by two explosions, probably grenades.
The police said that the house that was attacked may have been occupied by local gang members that were probably asleep during the attack. "It was unfortunate. We think that the two kids killed were awakened by a noise and killed when they investigated the disturbance."
Metro Police are basing their accusations on reports from surviving gang members. The Renegades are a violent, lawless biker gang with connections to various organized crime rings. Gang members have been arrested for crimes ranging from prostitution, drug and BTL dealing, assault, and even murder.
"We hope this attack does not lead to retaliation against the local Hispanic community," said LULAC spokesperson Armando Gutierrez. "All too often local officials and business people confuse all Hispanics as Aztlans."
Gutierrez and LULAC officials are already trying to minimize any cultural responses to the attack against the local gang. "We're holding meetings for all Metro Police to explain the situation and assure that the police does not negatively respond to local Hispanics," said Sergeant Enrique Ruiz, representative of the Hispanic Policeperson's Union.
Metro Police have contacted Aztlan officials and expect full cooperation.
Neighbors reported the explosions at about midnight. Police responded within three minutes with over twenty cars and SWAT personnel. They report that witnesses to the attack identified two assailants who are reportedly affiliated with the Brownsville chapter of the Renegades.
Witnesses say that the Aztlan gang members were attempting to assassinate the leadership of the Houston chapter. The gang leaders were not found among the survivors, wounded or dead.
Metro Police Captain William Anders, said that the gang leader known as Billy had been "arrested twice before and is prone to extreme violence. He led the gang by brute force and cunning. His two lieutenants, a Coyote shaman and cyborg, are equally dangerous." He further reported that the two Aztlan gang members had attacked the local gang's compound earlier that day, severely injuring one.
"We have contacted Aztlan officials and requested any assistance they can provide. We were provided with a video of the two attackers taken during the afternoon assault. So far we don't have a positive ID but we hope that with Aztlan assistance we can catch the would be assassins soon."
Trauma Team medics took four gang members to Ben Taub for burns and wounds resulting from the explosions. Two gangers were found dead, apparently blown apart. Several members were found around the grounds and treated for injuries suffered from stun rounds fired from .45 caliber pistols.
Neighbors were terrified and complained about the lack of recent police protection. "We have complained to City Hall repeatedly. We showed them trideos of prostitution and drug and BTL deals taking place on the street corners. They didn't do anything about them, not even a single car patrolling the neighborhood. We blame the city for this attack."
